Dear Fellow Knights...
"Lord, teach us to pray.” The gospels make it clear that prayer was an important part of Jesus’ ministry. They tell us it was His custom to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath to hear God’s word and pray with the community, and describe Him as going off by himself to pray. His followers obviously noticed how important prayer was for Him, and so asked Him to teach them how to pray. They realized that they could not be faithful to what He taught without prayer in their own lives.
This is just as true for Jesus’ followers today as it was then. Prayer as individuals, as families, and as part of the larger Church community is vital for us if we are to follow in the footsteps of the Lord. And any Catholic organization whose members are not grounded in prayer will never really accomplish its purpose. Prayer must be part of the very foundation of the work of the Knights of Columbus, and any council whose members are not men of prayer will never truly reflect the gospel regardless of the work they may do. Do we take time for prayer as individuals and as families? Are we faithful to the celebration of the Eucharist? If we cannot answer “yes” to both those questions, we will never fully express the purpose of the Order.
