St. Patrick's
COUNCIL #1259
Sept./Oct. 2010

Dear Fellow Knights...

"Lord, teach us to pray.” The gospels make it clear that prayer was an important part of Jesus’ ministry. They tell us it was His custom to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath to hear God’s word and pray with the community, and describe Him as going off by himself to pray. His followers obviously noticed how important prayer was for Him, and so asked Him to teach them how to pray. They realized that they could not be faithful to what He taught without prayer in their own lives.

This is just as true for Jesus’ followers today as it was then. Prayer as individuals, as families, and as part of the larger Church community is vital for us if we are to follow in the footsteps of the Lord. And any Catholic organization whose members are not grounded in prayer will never really accomplish its purpose. Prayer must be part of the very foundation of the work of the Knights of Columbus, and any council whose members are not men of prayer will never truly reflect the gospel regardless of the work they may do. Do we take time for prayer as individuals and as families? Are we faithful to the celebration of the Eucharist? If we cannot answer “yes” to both those questions, we will never fully express the purpose of the Order.

Fr. Bob Grosch,
Council Chaplain

Worthy Brother Knights,
We have been busy these last couple of months! We have cooked for the Catholic School fundraiser, and we held our annual Summer Picnic on Aug. 8th. Now we are preparing for the Kids’ Day with Dad, to be held Sept. 19th at the hall.

For Kids’ Day with Dad, Brother Seth Weston has arranged to have a City officer and car, Sheriff’s officer and car, and a City Fire truck. Brother Dave Binstock is cooking hamburgers and hotdogs. Brother Knights and kids are welcome to attend. We will have the officers and firefighters give a safety talk to the kids and let them have an up-close look at the equipment. We will start at 11:00 a.m. If you would like to help set up, please contact me.

The Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament was rescheduled for Sept. 24 & 26. We still have room for some teams. If you are interested in playing, call the Knights of Columbus Hall (656-7010) to sign up.

With the Fish Fry's around the corner, the Columbia Club has purchased a gas fryer for us to use, and we will have this up and running soon.

Thanks to Brother Patrick Boehm for his work on the Summer picnic. There were about 60 Knights and families that attended and had a great time. Thank you, Pat.

Beginning Sept. 22nd, area Christians will pray day and night in front of the Planned Parenthood on Wicks Lane.

Remember to attend your council meetings the second Thursday of each month.

Vivat Jesus,
Karl Boltz, Grand Knight

Golf Tournament Dates Reset
Dates were changed and the event will be held Sept. 24 - 26th. We need twenty-five teams so sign up today.

Newsletter Format Change
We are looking into switching to a web-based newsletter format where officers and other Knights can make updates at any time. There would be a one-time set-up fee, and then no more costs except for hosting. Design, printing and postage costs would all go away. Please contact Bill Gibson for more information.

Fly the Flag!
On Saturday, September 11th, 2010, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this ninth anniversary of one of our country’s worst tragedies. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn’t take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.
